Youth Leadership Jefferson County (YLJC) is an innovative program designed to develop the community leadership potential of high school students in Jefferson County. YLJC is a program of the West Chamber Serving Jefferson County Foundation.

How YLJC Began
Youth Leadership Jefferson County was the idea of a high school student who saw the need for a program specifically to develop and promote the leadership potential of high school students in Jefferson County. The program was designed to bring together local youth to explore leadership in unique and innovative ways.

How YLJC Works
In April of each year, interested students may submit an application for the Youth Leadership Jefferson County Program. Applicants must be sophomores, juniors or seniors during the upcoming school year. Required application documents include answers to all questions on the application and written permission from a parent or guardian, a high school counselor, and a principal. Students must also submit two letters of recommendation, one from a teacher, counselor, coach or administrator and one from an adult in the community. By July, up to 35 Jefferson County high school students will be selected for the program. Once accepted to the program, students will be expected to participate in full-day monthly sessions from September through May. Tuition is $100 (scholarships are available based on need).

How YLJC Is Funded
Youth Leadership Jefferson County is a program of The West Chamber Serving Jefferson County Foundation.  YLJC is supported by grants, individual donations, business sponsorships, and in-kind donations.  To find out how to help Youth Leadership Jefferson County continue to give students the opportunity to grow as leaders, call the West Chamber Foundation Serving Jefferson County at 303-233-5555.

YLJC Goals

    • Develop Jefferson County high school students’ leadership potential by integrating existing knowledge with real world leadership experience.
    • Broaden students’ perspective on a variety of community issues by interacting with business and community leaders.
    • Expose students to a variety of career options and volunteer opportunities within the community.
    • Encourage students' self-evaluation of civic responsibility and contribution as future leaders in the community.

    YLJC Days
The program days are designed to give students a chance to interact with community leaders and institutions, to explore educational and career options, to experience leadership through hands-on activities, and to broaden their perspectives on community issues.   YLJC provides real world experiences through multiple approaches including lecture, experiential hands-on activity, site visits, panels, case studies, and small group discussion.
